This past week Todd went on a back packing trip in the back country of the Wasatch Mountains. We usually go out and explore together, but I sat this trip out since it was a little too extreme for me. I love to go camping and hike all day, but to carry a 50 lb pack straight up hill and sleep in a make shift lean-to is not my idea of fun.
The late fall can be a great time to get into the back country for many reasons, just make sure you are prepared for fast changing weather and freezing cold temperatures at night. In Utah, it can be sunny and warm one minute, then snowing the next. This presents the challenge of packing light, but also packing to be prepared.
One of the things that Todd wasn’t prepared for was running into a rutting bull moose as he rounded the bend on the trail. With the moose blocking the trail and no way around it, the only option was to cautiously try and hike past it. Just as he thought he was in the safe zone the moose charged out of the brush and chased him down the trail. While we can talk and laugh about it now, you definitely don’t want to mess with a moose and always want to keep your distance!
Todd came home with some amazing pictures and great stories but it just wasn’t the same without each other. It isn’t always where you go and what you do, it’s the people you spend your time with that makes the trip special. We can’t wait to get back out and have another adventure of our own!
Seems like you had a great time!

Thanks! I love the mountains too! It’s so pretty here too because you can have snow covered mountains and then just a few hours away you hit the red rock! It’s the best!

Great post!! Carrying a 50 pound pack up steep terrain is not my idea of fun either. I carry a mere 10 pounds of equipment when I hike with my camera and fanny pack with 2 bottles of water, and believe me, that is enough! Gorgeous pictures! Thanks for sharing!! ❤

I agree – it is totally the people that you are with that make the experience special. I was just reflecting on this the other day with my hubby…..i told him i didn’t feel that any of the cycling adventures would have been the same without him 🙂
